The Wendigo

“You know in England they call flashlights torches? Isn’t that neat?” Chase asked, as we walked farther into the forest.

All four of us were using our flashlights to make sure we didn’t trip over any large rocks or gnarly tree branches.

“I think you should at least whisper. We want to find the wendigo, we don’t want the wendigo to find us,” Bella whispered harshly.

“Oh relax Bella,” Mason said loudly, putting his arm around her shoulder. “You don’t actually believe it’s real, do you?”

“Anything’s possible, right Billie?” Bella asked.

“Yeah,” I said quietly.

I stepped closer to Chase. “That is neat. The flashlight/torch thing.”

He smiled at me and held his hand out. I took it and we interlocked our fingers.

There was a loud, scurrying noise behind us. We turned around. Nothing was there.

“What was that it?” Bella whispered. She moved closer to Mason.

“Dunno,” Mason whispered. “Could be a dog…”

“Pretty big dog,” Chase whispered. He squeezed my hand.

“Maybe we should leave,” I whispered.

“One problem,” Bella said, “we came in that way.”

“Maybe it’s gone. Whatever it is,” I said.

There was a low growling sound behind us. My stomach knotted.

“Bella, don’t,” I said through gritted teeth, but Bella had turned to look.

She screamed and dropped her flashlight. She took off running. Mason followed without looking. Chase and I started running at the same time.

I heard it coming, but I didn’t dare look back. I heard a loud thud and saw Chase disappear from my peripheral vision.

Without thinking, I turned around and pushed the energy out of my hands to create a force field. It stopped the wendigo in its tracks. It was massive: all white fur with blood on its mouth and razor sharp teeth. It used its huge, white antlers and claws to scratch at the force field. It didn’t falter.

“Run!” I yelled.

Chase stood up. “Hurry!”

I heard his footsteps as he ran away just before the wendigo screeched.

I gathered up all my strength and energy and pushed as hard as I could. The wendigo flew back and before it hit the ground, I took off running.
