Brittany’s Baking Stories: The Prep

Don’t worry. This isn’t turning into a baking blog. I got the cookbook Black Girl Baking by Jerrelle Guy for Christmas. I first saw Jerrelle on the show High on the Hog on Netflix. She had such interesting flavors and textures with her raw raspberry hibiscus cheesecake and her red velvet cake (made with beets!) with maple cream cheese frosting. I wanted to see what interesting stuff she had in her cookbook and fortunately, it was gifted to me.

So I decided it would be fun to bake something at least once a month from the cookbook. I might venture off and make something that’s been on my mind to make (looking at you, chocolate chess pie), but most treats will be from Black Girl Baking. And I thought it’d be fun to share what I make along the way.

Why baking? Because it’s fun! Well, for the most part. Baking can be a lot of work, but when I usually bake stuff it’s for fun. It also allows me to be present. I tend to be constantly thinking ahead and baking usually slows me down. One step at a time, slow and steady. But sometimes even with doing things one step at a time, it doesn’t always turn out perfect. I can let go of looks, but things must taste good.

I admit, I went back and forth about how I would share my baking stories and if I should. Everything doesn’t have to be content. And, in fact, more things can be therapeutic if we just exist in the moment instead of worrying about constructing something to put out there. So I decided to take it easy. I’ll share what I feel comfortable sharing. I’ll decide with each baking adventure if I want to just do photos or photos and videos. I’ll probably always share some words, but I don’t even want to hold myself to that. I just want to try to make things and have fun.

With baking, there’s always prep. And since I’m not a baker, I’ll need some new tools. I’ll be getting an electric mixer, a cake pan, and a cooling rack to start. I’ll need some other pans and I might work my way up to getting a stand mixer. And this post is my way of preparing you for this new content. And of course, I’ll try to connect it back to writing. For example, writing like baking requires preparation. Even if you don’t have a detailed outline, it helps to know where you want the story to go and how you want the story to end. You need to know your character’s strengths and weaknesses and motivation. You need to know how the plot will affect the character. You need to know if you even have a plot. And while writing can be a lot of work, it should also be fun.

So I hope you enjoy these baking stories! Let me know if you like to bake or what your favorite treat is. I’ll be sharing the name of the recipe in my next baking story blog post, but just know, I’ll be making something chocolate.
